Ubuntu 8.04 + Avant

Yesterday I wrote a little on my wife’s laptop and removing Microsoft Vista and replacing it with Ubuntu Studio.  It has gone really smoothly so far.  I have put Compiz Fusion on with Emerald Theme Manager as well as used some of the Mac4Lin project to change the Metacity Theme, Icons and Cursors to be more Mac like… just because I can ;)

Avant Window Navigator is also now available through the Ubuntu repositories but it is a little old and I decided to rather add the launchpad repositories and add “awn” from there.

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu/ hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu/ hardy main

Once you have added the above two to your “etc/apt/sources.list” file and reloaded you can add “avant-window-navigator-bzr” like this:

sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator-bzr awn-core-applets-bzr awn-manager-bzr

To run “awn” go to “Accessories -> Avant Window Navigator”.  It is definately a useful app and it helps that it makes the desktop look “complete”.

Next step is to get the Broadcom Wireless to work.  I was hoping that Hardy would have this sorted out but it still seems to be a problem.  Maybe once it’s out of Beta and is officially released this will be workig.

For now though, I have attached a screenshot of my dektop… check it out ;)

    when using the repo’s you’ve suggested i can not get the preferences to open. any solution ?

    I think im having the same problem that bastidraZor is having. I tried to launch it from the command line and it gives a segmentation fault. This is on ubuntu 8.04. Anyone have any ideas?

    Yes I am having the same problem as ravious. I cannot open the awn-manager with the bzr repo. any fix for this?

    TO EDIT THE DOCK preferences

    sudo apt-get install awn-manager-bzr

    Broad com was fixed in update package on my hp tx 2113. Wireless works great.
